Church of Saints Peter and Paul

History & Background

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul holds the distinction of being Krakow's first Baroque church, constructed between 1597 and 1635 under the patronage of King Sigismund III Vasa. The Jesuits arrived in Krakow to counter the spread of Protestantism, and they wanted their church to make a statement — and it did. Inspired by Rome's Il Gesù, the design brought Italian Baroque drama to Polish soil for the first time. The church later became the site where Father Piotr Skarga, one of the most influential Polish preachers of the era, delivered his famous sermons. His crypt remains here to this day, making this a place of genuine national significance.
