Museum of Municipal Engineering
Housed in a former tram depot in Kazimierz, this surprisingly engaging museum covers the history of Krakow's infrastructure — trams, cars, printing presses, and technology. The vintage vehicle collection includes trams you can board and a hands-on area for children. A hit with kids and engineering enthusiasts.
Tucked inside a beautifully restored 19th-century tram depot, this is one of Krakow's most genuinely surprising museums — the kind of place you almost skip and then end up spending two hours inside.
History & Background
The Museum of Municipal Engineering (Muzeum Inżynierii Miejskiej) opened in 1998 on ul. św. Wawrzyńca in the heart of Kazimierz, Krakow's historic Jewish and bohemian quarter. The building itself is worth the visit — a grand red-brick depot that once housed the city's working tram fleet. Rather than demolishing it during modernisation, Krakow preserved the structure as a monument to the city's industrial heritage. The collection tells the story of how Krakow grew from a medieval city into a functioning modern metropolis, covering everything from urban transport and printing technology to early automobiles and municipal infrastructure. It's a side of Polish history that mainstream sightseeing often overlooks entirely.
What to Expect
The permanent collection centres on a remarkable fleet of vintage trams, many of which you can actually board and explore — a detail that makes an immediate impression on both adults and children. Beyond the trams, you'll find historic automobiles, motorcycles, printing presses, and mechanical exhibits spread across the airy depot floor. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried, a welcome contrast to Krakow's busier Old Town attractions. There's a dedicated hands-on interactive zone for children, making this one of the better family-friendly stops in the city. Budget 90 minutes to two hours to do it justice. Admission is very reasonable at around 15–20 PLN for adults, with discounts for students and children.
Insider Tip
Visit on a weekday morning when school groups haven't yet arrived — the interactive sections are far more accessible and the staff have time to chat. Also worth knowing: the museum occasionally hosts vintage tram rides through Kazimierz on special event days, particularly around heritage festivals in summer. Check their website before your visit, as these sell out quickly and aren't widely advertised in English-language guides. If you're combining this with a day in Kazimierz, it pairs perfectly with a walk along ul. Szeroka and lunch at one of the neighbourhood's excellent Jewish-style restaurants nearby.
