Park Bednarskiego

Perched above the rooftops of Podgórze, this hidden hillside escape offers some of the most rewarding views in all of Krakow — without the crowds that swamp the city's more famous green spaces.

History & Background

Park Bednarskiego opened in 1896, making it one of Krakow's oldest public parks. It was established on land that once held the Austrian-era Krakus Fort, a 19th-century defensive fortification built during the period of Galician partition when Krakow sat within the Habsburg Empire. The fort's atmospheric ruins still stand at the heart of the park today, giving it a layered, slightly mysterious quality that sets it apart from a typical city green. The park itself was designed and gifted to the city by Feliks Bednarski, a local patron whose name it carries to this day. That civic generosity is still appreciated by the Podgórze locals who treat it as their own quiet backyard.

What to Expect

Wind your way up through mature chestnut and linden trees along well-maintained paths that climb the escarpment above ulica Parkowa. The terrain is gently hilly rather than strenuous — sturdy shoes are recommended but nothing more. At the top, the fort ruins provide a dramatic focal point, and just beyond them the ridge opens up to deliver sweeping panoramas across the Vistula towards Wawel Castle and the Old Town skyline. It's the kind of view that stops you mid-step. Budget around 45–60 minutes for a relaxed visit, or longer if you plan to continue along the ridge trail. The park connects naturally to the Krakus Mound — one of Krakow's ancient pre-Christian burial mounds — via a pleasant 10-minute walk, making it easy to combine both in a single outing. The atmosphere is genuinely local: dog walkers, joggers, and families rather than tour groups.

Insider Tip

Skip the main ulica Parkowa entrance and instead approach from the upper path near ulica Maryewskiego on the southern side. This route brings you directly to the fort ruins and the viewpoint without the uphill climb, and you'll arrive at the best panorama almost immediately. Come in the late afternoon when the sun swings west and bathes Wawel Castle in golden light — it's one of the best sunset vantage points in the city, and on a clear evening you'll have it almost entirely to yourself.
