History & Background

Park Lotników Polskich — translated as Airmen's Park — is the largest park in Nowa Huta, the remarkable socialist-era district built from scratch in the late 1940s as Poland's model communist city. Urban planners designed the park deliberately as the district's "green lung", giving factory workers and their families a genuine escape from the industrial landscape surrounding them. The name honours Polish airmen, many of whom served with distinction alongside the RAF during the Second World War. What makes the park historically fascinating is that beneath its mature canopy lies something far older: remnants of a medieval village that existed on this land centuries before Nowa Huta was ever conceived. It's a quietly layered place, with socialist idealism literally rooted in medieval soil.

What to Expect

The park stretches across a generous expanse of mature woodland, open meadows, and well-maintained walking paths that feel genuinely unhurried. The centrepiece is a large lake, which comes alive in summer when families rent pedalos and children crowd the banks. The atmosphere is refreshingly ordinary in the best possible sense — grandparents on benches, dogs chasing sticks, teenagers cycling in loose circles. You will almost certainly be the only non-local here, which is precisely the point. Plan to spend one to two hours wandering, longer if you bring a picnic. There are no entrance fees, no queues, and no gift shops.

Most visitors who make it to Nowa Huta combine the park with Plac Centralny and the Nowa Huta Museum, which makes perfect sense — but don't rush through. Near the park's edges, look carefully for the earthwork traces and low-lying remnants associated with the pre-socialist village of Mogiła's surrounding settlements. They're easy to miss if you're moving quickly. Better yet, visit on a Sunday morning when local families are out in full force and the pace slows to something beautifully unhurried. From the city centre, tram lines 4 or 10 will bring you out to Nowa Huta in around 30 minutes — a journey that is itself worth making for the gradual architectural shift alone.
