Plac Nowy (New Square)

Established in the 19th century as a marketplace serving Kazimierz's historically Jewish community, Plac Nowy has always been a place of commerce and congregation. At its center stands the distinctive rotunda — a circular, ochre-colored market hall built in 1900 — which once functioned as a ritual poultry slaughterhouse (shochet) in accordance with Jewish dietary laws. This detail alone speaks to the square's layered past. During World War II, Kazimierz was devastated, but Plac Nowy survived and eventually transformed into the bohemian hub it is today, becoming central to the neighborhood's celebrated revival from the 1990s onward.

What to Expect

The square shifts personality dramatically depending on the hour. On weekend mornings, a bustling flea market takes over — vendors spread out vinyl records, communist-era memorabilia, vintage clothing, old postcards, and silverware across folding tables and blankets. Prices are negotiable, and genuine finds are still possible if you arrive early. By day, the rotunda itself operates as a food market selling fresh produce and local goods.

As evening falls, the square transforms entirely. The rotunda's windows become the counters for zapiekanka vendors — those legendary open-faced baguettes loaded with mushrooms, cheese, and toppings that have made Plac Nowy the undisputed zapiekanka capital of Poland. A solid half-baguette costs around 10–15 PLN. The surrounding bars and low-key clubs gradually fill with a young, creative crowd, and the square hums until the early hours. Plan to spend 30 minutes browsing the flea market or easily an entire evening if you let the night unfold naturally.
