Tempel Synagogue
The most ornate of Kazimierz's surviving synagogues, built in 1862 in a Moorish Revival style. Its stunning interior of gilded arabesques and stained glass now hosts cultural events and concerts.
Prepare to have your breath taken away the moment you step through the doors. Nestled in the heart of Kazimierz, Tempel Synagogue is the most spectacular Jewish house of worship still standing in Krakow — a jewel of 19th-century architecture that somehow survived when so much else did not.
History & Background
Completed in 1862 and commissioned by the city's progressive Reform Jewish community, Tempel Synagogue was designed to reflect a community that was confident, culturally integrated, and unafraid to express itself boldly. The Moorish Revival style — then fashionable across Central Europe — gave architects the freedom to create something truly extraordinary. Unlike the older, more austere synagogues of Kazimierz, Tempel was built to impress. During World War II, the synagogue was ransacked and used as a stable by German forces, yet its core structure endured. Postwar restoration efforts, supported by international donors and the Jewish Community of Krakow, have gradually brought it back to life, making it one of the most important symbols of Jewish heritage revival in Poland.
What to Expect
From the outside on ul. Miodowa, the synagogue's facade hints at what's inside — but nothing fully prepares you for the interior. Gilded arabesques sweep across the walls and ceiling, vibrant stained glass windows flood the space with colour, and the ornate women's gallery wraps elegantly around three sides of the hall. It's simultaneously a place of worship, a work of art, and a living memorial. The synagogue is open to visitors most days (entry around 10–15 PLN), and the atmosphere shifts beautifully depending on when you visit — quiet and contemplative in the mornings, often electric during the Jewish Culture Festival held each summer, when world-class musicians perform concerts here that you will not forget.
Plan to spend at least 30 to 45 minutes — long enough to absorb the details without rushing.
Insider Tip
If you want to experience Tempel Synagogue at its absolute finest, check the schedule for evening concerts held throughout the year. The acoustics are remarkable, the candlelit ambiance is magical, and tickets are surprisingly affordable — often 40–60 PLN. Booking even a few days ahead through the Jewish Community Centre (JCC) on ul. Miodowa or directly via the synagogue is strongly recommended, as these events consistently sell out. It transforms a sightseeing stop into a genuinely moving evening that captures everything special about modern Kazimierz — historic, vibrant, and beautifully alive.
