Auschwitz-Birkenau is located in Oswiecim, 70 km west of Krakow. Visiting is one of the most significant experiences a person can have — it deserves careful planning and emotional preparation.
Getting there: organized tours from Krakow (150-250 PLN, 6-7 hours including transport and guided tour) are the easiest option. Independent travel: bus from Krakow MDA bus station (18 PLN, 1.5 hours) to Oswiecim, then local bus or walk to the museum. Driving takes about 1 hour.
Tickets: entry to both Auschwitz I and Birkenau is FREE, but guided tours (strongly recommended) require advance booking at auschwitz.org. In summer, independent (non-guided) entry is only available very early morning (7:30 AM) or late afternoon (after 3 PM). Book guided tours weeks in advance — they sell out.
What to expect: the guided tour covers Auschwitz I (the original camp — brick barracks, gas chamber, exhibitions) and Birkenau (the massive extermination camp — wooden barracks stretching to the horizon, selection platform, crematoria ruins). Total visit: 3.5-4 hours.
Practical considerations: wear comfortable walking shoes (extensive walking on uneven ground), bring water, and dress for weather (mostly outdoors). Large bags are not permitted. Photography is allowed in most areas but should be done respectfully. There is a cafeteria.
Emotional preparation: Auschwitz is overwhelming. Many visitors describe the experience as the most emotionally intense of their lives. Allow quiet time afterward — avoid scheduling busy activities for the rest of the day.
