Auschwitz-Birkenau, located 70 km west of Krakow in Oswiecim, is the most visited Holocaust memorial in the world. The site where over 1.1 million people were murdered — the vast majority European Jews — is a profoundly important place that requires advance planning and emotional preparation. Entry to the memorial is free, but timed entry tickets must be booked online in advance at auschwitz.org, often weeks ahead in summer.
From Krakow, the most reliable transport is the direct bus from the main bus station (Dworzec MDA) — buses run roughly every 30 minutes, take 90 minutes, and cost about 15 PLN each way. You can also take the train to Oswiecim station, then a local bus to the memorial. Organized tours from Krakow (150-250 PLN) include transport, a licensed guide, and skip most logistical hassle, which can be worthwhile for first-time visitors. Allow at least 3.5 hours for both Auschwitz I and Birkenau — a shuttle bus connects the two sites.
Dress respectfully and bring water, as the walking is extensive. Photography is allowed in most areas but not in certain rooms (such as the room containing victims' hair). The experience is emotionally intense — many visitors find the scale of Birkenau, with its endless rows of barracks stretching to the horizon, the most affecting part. Children under 14 are not recommended. Silence and respect are expected throughout. The on-site bookshop has excellent historical resources if you want to learn more.
