Is Krakow Safe? Safety Tips for Tourists

Krakow is one of the safest cities in Europe, but a few common-sense precautions go a long way.

Krakow is genuinely one of the safest major cities in Europe. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare, the streets are well-lit and populated late at night, and the police presence in the center is visible. That said, a few common-sense precautions apply.

PICKPOCKETING: The main risk for tourists, concentrated on the Main Market Square, Ulica Florianska, and crowded trams. Keep valuables in front pockets or a cross-body bag. Be aware of distraction techniques — someone asking you to sign a petition while a partner reaches for your pocket. The risk level is lower than Rome, Barcelona, or Prague.

SCAMS TO AVOID: Euronet ATMs charge hidden fees — use bank ATMs only (PKO BP, mBank, Santander). Strip clubs in the Old Town have been known to overcharge aggressively — avoid anyone handing out flyers. Exchange offices at the airport and station offer terrible rates — change money in the city center or use a Revolut/Wise card.

NIGHTTIME: The Old Town and Kazimierz are safe to walk at night. Exercise normal caution in poorly-lit areas of Podgorze and outer neighborhoods after midnight. Solo women travelers generally report feeling safe, though the usual precautions about drinks and unfamiliar company apply.

EMERGENCIES: Dial 112 for all emergencies (operators speak English). The nearest 24-hour pharmacy (apteka) can be found via Google Maps. The University Hospital on Kopernika Street has an English-speaking emergency department.
