Krakow for Art Lovers: A 3-Day Cultural Itinerary

From medieval altarpieces to contemporary installations — Krakow's art spans 700 years.

DAY 1: MEDIEVAL TO RENAISSANCE

Morning: St. Mary's Basilica for Veit Stoss's wooden altarpiece (1489) — the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world. Then the Cloth Hall Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art upstairs — Matejko's vast historical canvases and Chelmonski's luminous landscapes.

Afternoon: Czartoryski Museum for Leonardo's "Lady with an Ermine." Then Europeum for European Old Masters in an intimate setting. End at the Collegium Maius for Copernicus-era instruments and medieval academic art.

Evening: dinner at Szara on the Main Square (art-influenced cuisine in a historic setting).

DAY 2: ART NOUVEAU TO AVANT-GARDE

Morning: the Franciscan Church for Wyspianski's extraordinary Art Nouveau stained glass. Then the Wyspianski Museum (Szolayski House) for his paintings, theatrical designs, and stained glass cartoons. The Stained Glass Museum to watch artisans create using Wyspianski's techniques.

Afternoon: the Jozef Mehoffer House (Art Nouveau painter's preserved home). Then the Cricoteka for Tadeusz Kantor's avant-garde theater art.

Evening: live performance at the Stary Teatr or a contemporary gallery opening in Kazimierz.

DAY 3: CONTEMPORARY & STREET ART

Morning: MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art (free Tuesdays). Then explore the galleries and studios of Zablocie.

Afternoon: Kazimierz street art walking tour — Ulica Jozefa, Plac Nowy passages, and the industrial walls off Sw. Wawrzynca.

Evening: drinks at Bunkier Sztuki rooftop terrace, overlooking the Planty and the brutalist gallery that proved Krakow could embrace the radical.
