Krakow's Best Bakeries: Bread, Pastries & Paczki

From traditional Polish rye to French-style sourdough — Krakow's baking renaissance.

Polish bread culture runs deep — a good chleb (bread) is considered essential to daily life, and Krakow's bakery scene has expanded from traditional village-style loaves to include artisan sourdough, French patisserie, and everything in between.

Charlotte Chleb i Wino sets the standard for artisan baking — their sourdough, croissants, and rye bread are exceptional. Arrive early for the best selection. Chleb i Roze on Jozefa Street uses heritage Polish grain varieties and natural fermentation.

For traditional Polish pastries: Cukiernia Staropolska on Slawkowska has made kremowka (the papal cream cake), wuzetka (chocolate-cream layer cake), and sernik (cheesecake) for decades. Piekarnia Mojego Taty in Kazimierz produces authentic paczki (doughnuts) with rose petal jam that sell out daily.

Paczkarnia near the Barbican specializes exclusively in paczki — Polish doughnuts that are denser, richer, and more satisfying than American versions. Fat Thursday (Tlusty Czwartek, before Lent) sees Poles consume an estimated 100 million paczki in a single day.

The obwarzanek — Krakow's signature braided bread ring — is sold from blue street carts citywide. Technically a different product from a bagel or pretzel, the obwarzanek is boiled then baked, creating a unique chewy-crispy texture. Choose poppy seed, sesame, or salt. 3-5 PLN each.
