Krakow is one of the cheapest cities in Europe for eating well. Here's how to fill up for under 30 PLN (about 7 EUR) per meal.
MILK BARS (Bar Mleczny) — 15-25 PLN per meal:
Bar Mleczny Pod Temida (Old Town) — pierogi for 12 PLN, soup for 8 PLN. Bar Mleczny Gornik (Nowa Huta) — the real communist-era experience. Bar Mleczny Prasowy (Old Town) — nalesniki and tomato soup near the university. Self-service, tray dining, handwritten menus. The most authentic Polish food experience at any price.
STREET FOOD — 10-20 PLN:
Obwarzanki from blue carts (3-5 PLN). Zapiekanka at Plac Nowy (12-18 PLN). Grilled kielbasa from street vendors (15-18 PLN). Grilled oscypek with cranberry from highland women near the Cloth Hall (10-15 PLN).
BUDGET RESTAURANTS — 20-30 PLN:
Glonojad vegan daily specials (20-25 PLN). Vega buffet — pay by weight (15-22 PLN). Przystanek Pierogarnia in Kazimierz — 12 pierogi for 20 PLN. Kuchnia Marche market-style cafeteria (25-30 PLN).
SUPERMARKET PICNICS — under 20 PLN:
Biedronka and Zabka convenience stores sell bread, cheese, yogurt, fruit, and decent prepared salads. Grab supplies and picnic on the Vistula boulevards or in the Planty.
BREAKFAST — under 15 PLN:
A fresh bulka (bread roll) with cheese and tomato from any bakery. Coffee from a non-specialty cafe. An obwarzanek from the street. Total: 10-15 PLN for a filling morning.
