Krakow's Christmas Market on the Main Market Square is one of the finest in Central Europe — smaller than Vienna or Prague but more authentic and far less commercial. Running from late November through December 26, the wooden stalls fill the square beneath the Gothic towers of St. Mary's Basilica.
Food highlights: grzaniec galicyjski (Galician mulled wine, richer than German Gluhwein with honey and spices), grilled oscypek with cranberry, roasted kielbasa, trdelnik (chimney cakes), and pierogi. Prices are very reasonable — a mulled wine runs 12-15 PLN, a kielbasa 10-15 PLN.
The szopka competition (first Thursday of December) is uniquely Krakow — master craftsmen display elaborate miniature churches and buildings made from cardboard, foil, and paint. This folk art tradition dates to the 19th century and was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2018.
Beyond the Main Square: smaller markets appear in Kazimierz (Plac Nowy) and the Galeria Krakowska. Christmas concert series in churches throughout December offer free performances of classical and choral music in stunning acoustics.
