The Trail of the Eagles' Nests (Szlak Orlich Gniazd) is a 163-km route connecting 25 medieval castle ruins perched on limestone cliffs between Krakow and Czestochowa. Built in the 14th century by King Casimir the Great to defend against invasion, these fortresses create one of Poland's most dramatic landscapes.
FROM KRAKOW, THE CLOSEST CASTLES:
Ojcow Castle (16 km) — ruins in the heart of Ojcow National Park, overlooking the Pradnik Valley. Combined with a park hike and cave visit.
Pieskowa Skala Castle (25 km) — the best-preserved castle on the trail. A stunning Renaissance courtyard, art museum, and dramatic cliff-top setting. Open as a museum branch of Wawel Castle.
Rabsztyn Castle (45 km) — atmospheric ruins on a hilltop with sweeping views. Recently partially reconstructed with a viewing platform.
Ogrodzieniec Castle (80 km) — the most spectacular ruins on the trail. Massive walls cling to limestone pinnacles, creating a fantasy-novel landscape. Summer events include medieval tournaments and night tours by torchlight.
HOW TO DO IT:
By car: the trail is a full-day drive (or better, 2 days with overnight). The roads are good and well-signed.
As a day trip from Krakow: visit Ojcow + Pieskowa Skala in a half day. Or drive to Ogrodzieniec and back (2 hours each way) for the most dramatic castle.
Guided tours: several Krakow operators run Eagles' Nests day trips covering 2-3 castles.
Hiking: the full trail is a multi-day hike (blue trail markers). Most hikers walk selected sections rather than the complete route.
