Krakow has excellent healthcare infrastructure. Here's what you need if something goes wrong.
EMERGENCY NUMBERS:
112 - General emergency (English-speaking operators available)

HOSPITALS WITH ENGLISH-SPEAKING STAFF:
University Hospital (Szpital Uniwersytecki) - ul. Kopernika 36. The main teaching hospital with 24-hour emergency department. English widely spoken by doctors.
Medicover Hospital - private hospital with guaranteed English service. Faster, more comfortable, but expensive without insurance.
Lux Med - private clinic chain with walk-in appointments (200-300 PLN per consultation). English-speaking doctors, short wait times.
PHARMACIES (Apteka):
Pharmacies are everywhere and well-stocked. Many common medications that require prescriptions elsewhere (mild antibiotics, some painkillers) are available over the counter in Poland. 24-hour pharmacies: Apteka Dbam o Zdrowie (Galeria Krakowska), and several on the Old Town perimeter - ask your hotel for the nearest.
INSURANCE:
EU citizens: carry your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) for free or reduced-cost treatment at public hospitals.
Non-EU citizens: travel insurance is essential. Even excellent Polish healthcare becomes expensive without coverage. A private hospital visit can cost 1,000+ PLN.
COMMON ISSUES:
- Cobblestone ankle twists: wear sturdy shoes. If injured, pharmacies sell support bandages.
- Food and alcohol overconsumption: stay hydrated, Poland's generous portions and cheap vodka catch many visitors off-guard.
- Sun exposure: the Main Square has no shade - wear sunscreen in summer.
TAP WATER: safe to drink throughout Krakow. Carry a refillable bottle.
