Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List (1993) transformed Krakow into a pilgrimage site for film lovers. The factory is now a museum, but you can also visit the apartment at Ulica Lipowa 4 where the real Schindler lived, and walk through the former ghetto in Podgorze where key scenes were filmed.
The girl in the red coat — the film's most iconic image — was filmed on Ulica Jozefinska in Podgorze. The ghetto liquidation scenes used the actual streets of the former ghetto, and the Ghetto Heroes Square memorial now occupies where the selection scenes took place.
Beyond Spielberg, Kazimierz has appeared in numerous international productions drawn to its atmospheric cobblestones and unreconstructed buildings. Roman Polanski grew up in the Krakow Ghetto (his own story inspired The Pianist, though that film was set in Warsaw), and Andrzej Wajda's films frequently featured Krakow locations.
