Krakow in spring bloom is extraordinary — the city's parks, gardens, and hidden courtyards burst with color from late March through May. Here's where to find the best displays.
CHERRY BLOSSOMS (mid-April to early May):
The Planty park ring is the most accessible display — the section between the Barbican and the National Museum has several rows of flowering cherry trees that create a pink tunnel effect. The Jagiellonian University Botanic Garden has mature cherry trees with fewer crowds. Jordan's Park has scattered cherry trees set against green lawns.
MAGNOLIAS (late March to mid-April):
The earliest spring flowers in Krakow. Look for them in the Planty near the Basztowa tram stop, in the courtyard of the Archaeological Museum (hidden gem), and along Ulica Sw. Anny near the university.
WISTERIA (May):
Draping purple wisteria appears on building facades throughout the Old Town and Kazimierz in May. Ulica Kanonicza has some beautiful examples, as do the internal courtyards of several Old Town buildings.
WILDFLOWERS:
Blonia Meadow comes alive with wildflowers in May — dandelions first, then a succession of meadow flowers. The Nowa Huta Meadows are even more spectacular, with orchids and marsh flowers in the wetland areas.
The Kleparz market becomes a flower market in spring — stalls selling tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and potted herbs add splashes of color to the produce stalls. Saturday morning at Kleparz in April is peak spring energy.
