25 Genuinely Free Things to Do in Krakow

The best experiences in Krakow cost nothing — from museums to markets to viewpoints.

Krakow is one of Europe's best-value cities, and many of its finest experiences are completely free.

Free always: walking the Main Market Square and Cloth Hall ground floor, exploring the Planty park ring, Wawel Castle courtyard and grounds (buildings are paid), the Krakus Mound sunset viewpoint, all of Kazimierz's streets and atmosphere, the Vistula boulevards, Blonia Meadow, the Nowa Huta district, the Ghetto Heroes Square memorial, Ulica Kanonicza, and every church in the city (donations appreciated).

Free on specific days: MOCAK (Tuesday), the National Museum branches (selected days — check website), Rynek Underground (Tuesday, limited tickets), and the Ethnographic Museum (Sunday). Schindler's Factory offers free tickets on Monday but they must be reserved online and disappear within minutes of release.

Free experiences: the Hejnal trumpet call from St. Mary's tower (every hour on the hour), watching the Wawel Dragon breathe fire (every few minutes), the Stary Kleparz market (Saturday morning is best), street musicians on the Main Square, and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Free walking tours: several companies operate daily free walking tours of the Old Town and Kazimierz (tip-based). Quality varies — look for guides with local knowledge and small groups.

Free church concerts: especially during Advent, churches throughout the Old Town host free organ, choral, and classical music performances. The acoustics in the Gothic and Baroque spaces are extraordinary.
