Spring arrives in Krakow with an almost theatrical flourish. The Planty park ring erupts in cherry blossoms and magnolias in April, cafe terraces reappear after months of hibernation, and the first warm days (15-22C) draw crowds onto the streets for the sheer joy of being outside.
Easter (Wielkanoc) is the defining spring event. Holy Week brings processions through Old Town streets, churches display elaborate Easter tombs (Groby Panske), and on Easter Monday the tradition of Smigus-Dyngus (dousing people with water) turns the city into a cheerful water fight. The blessing of Easter baskets at dawn is a beautiful, participatory tradition.
May is ideal for visiting — warm enough for outdoor dining, cool enough for walking, and before the summer tourist crush. The Planty is at peak beauty, the Vistula boulevards come alive with joggers and cyclists, and day trips to Ojcow National Park or the Tatras are spectacular as mountain meadows bloom.
Practical spring tip: weather can be unpredictable in April, so pack layers and a rain jacket. By mid-May, you can usually rely on pleasant conditions.
