Parking in Krakow: Where to Leave Your Car

Driving into the Old Town is a mistake — here's the smart parking strategy.

Driving into Krakow's Old Town is not recommended — most streets are pedestrianized or restricted, parking is extremely limited, and the city is best explored on foot. If you're arriving by car (for day trips to the Tatras, Wieliczka, etc.), here's the strategy.

Park-and-ride (P+R): Krakow has several P+R lots at tram and bus termini on the city outskirts — Czerwone Maki (south), Nowy Bieżanow (southeast), and Mały Płaszow (east). Cost: 3-6 PLN/day plus a tram ticket to the center. These are the cheapest and most stress-free option.

Public parking garages near the center: Galeria Krakowska (connected to the train station, 6-8 PLN/hour, max ~80 PLN/day), Parking Wawel (near Wawel Castle, similar pricing), and Parking Szczepanski (underground lot on Plac Szczepanski, closest to the Old Town center).

Street parking in the paid zone: the Old Town and surrounding areas are covered by a paid parking zone (Mon-Sat 10:00-20:00). Buy tickets from parkometers using coins or the mobiParking app. Rates: 6 PLN first hour, progressive pricing. Free on Sundays and outside zone hours.

Avoiding fines: parking enforcement is active and efficient. Expired meters result in an immediate ticket (50-250 PLN depending on overstay). Don't park on sidewalks, in courtyards, or in resident-only zones marked with signs.

Best strategy: if staying multiple nights, choose a hotel with parking (many have garages for 50-100 PLN/night) and leave the car there for your entire stay. Use public transport and walking for all city exploration.
