Krakow's public transport network of trams and buses is efficient, cheap, and covers the entire city. Most visitors only need it for reaching Nowa Huta, Wieliczka, or outer neighborhoods — the Old Town and Kazimierz are easily walkable.
TICKET TYPES: Single ride tickets (20/40/60-minute) cost 4.60/6.00/8.00 PLN. The 24-hour pass (15 PLN) and 48-hour pass (24 PLN) offer the best value if you plan more than two rides per day. Buy from machines at major stops (card accepted), the MPK Krakow app, or newsagent kiosks. Validate paper tickets in the orange machines on board — inspectors fine un-validated tickets 300 PLN on the spot.
TRAMS: The backbone of the system. Tram routes 1, 3, 8, and 50 are most useful for tourists, connecting the station area through the Old Town fringe to Kazimierz and Podgorze. Trams run from approximately 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with night services on limited routes.
USEFUL ROUTES: Tram 50 runs from the station past Wawel to Kazimierz and on to Podgorze — it is effectively the tourist tram. Bus 304 reaches Wieliczka Salt Mine from the city center (40 minutes, regular ticket valid). Bus 501 reaches Tyniec Abbey.
TIPS: Google Maps and Jakdojade (the local transit app) both show real-time departures and route planning. Seats marked with a stroller or wheelchair symbol are priority seating — give them up when needed. Trams can get crowded during rush hours (7-9 AM, 3-5 PM).
