Start at the Barbican (9:00 AM) and walk through the Florian Gate onto Ulica Florianska — Krakow's most famous street. Stop at the Jan Matejko House (#41) if you're interested in Polish art history. The street delivers you to the Main Market Square.
Spend 30 minutes absorbing Europe's largest medieval square. Visit the Cloth Hall for souvenirs on the ground floor and Polish painting upstairs. If you're here on the hour, wait for the Hejnal trumpet call from St. Mary's tower. Enter the basilica to see Veit Stoss's masterpiece altarpiece (allow 20 minutes).
Head south on Ulica Grodzka toward Wawel, passing the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (note the apostle statues) and the Romanesque Church of St. Andrew. At Wawel Hill, explore the castle courtyard (free), peek into the cathedral, and visit the Dragon's Den cave (exit at the bottom to see the fire-breathing dragon statue). Total: about 3 hours, 3km of walking.
