Winter Packing List for Krakow: Surviving -10C in Style

Krakow winters are serious — here's exactly what to bring.

Krakow winter temperatures regularly drop to -5C and can plunge to -15C or lower during cold snaps. With the right gear, winter is magical. Without it, miserable. Here's the detailed packing list.

OUTER LAYER:
- A proper winter coat — insulated, wind-proof, ideally reaching mid-thigh. Down or synthetic fill rated to at least -10C. This is not optional.
- Waterproof winter boots with insulated soles. Cobblestones get icy — good traction is essential. Ankle-height minimum.
- A warm hat that covers your ears. Krakow's open squares create wind tunnels.
- Insulated gloves or mittens. Touchscreen-compatible is a bonus for phone use.
- A warm scarf or neck gaiter.

MID LAYER:
- Fleece or wool sweater. Merino wool is ideal — warm, breathable, doesn't smell after multiple wears.
- Thermal leggings under regular trousers for all-day outdoor walking.

BASE LAYER:
- Merino or synthetic thermal underwear (top and bottom) for days below -5C.
- Wool or thermal socks — at least 2-3 pairs.

ACCESSORIES:
- Hand warmers (disposable or rechargeable) for long outdoor walks and Christmas market browsing.
- A small backpack for removing layers indoors — Krakow's heated restaurants and museums are warm.
- Lip balm and moisturizer — the dry cold and heated interiors dehydrate skin fast.

COMMON MISTAKE: packing for cold but not for the indoor-outdoor temperature swings. Polish buildings are well-heated (often 22-24C). Dress in removable layers so you don't overheat inside museums and restaurants while staying warm on the walk between them.
