Endzior Zapiekanka

Kazimierz

The most famous zapiekanka (Polish pizza-toast) vendor in the Plac Nowy roundhouse. Endzior has been topping halved baguettes with mushrooms, cheese, and sauce since the 1990s. The "mega" size with extra toppings is the move. Best consumed standing up at midnight after the bars.

Few street foods in Poland inspire as much devotion as a perfectly loaded zapiekanka, and nowhere does it better than Endzior — the legendary stall tucked inside the iconic Plac Nowy roundhouse in the heart of Kazimierz.

History & Background

The zapiekanka itself is a communist-era invention: a halved baguette topped with mushrooms, melted cheese, and sauce, sold cheap and fast to feed a city on the move. When the iron curtain lifted, most vendors faded away — but Endzior didn't. Operating out of the circular okrągłak (the small rotunda at the center of Plac Nowy) since the 1990s, this stall became a Kazimierz institution long before the neighborhood transformed into Krakow's bohemian hotspot. It has outlasted trends, tourism booms, and countless competitors, earning its reputation one toasted baguette at a time.

What to Expect

Ordering is beautifully simple. Step up to the window, choose your size — standard or the legendary "mega" — and watch as your baguette gets piled with sautéed mushrooms, melted cheese, and a generous pour of sauce. The whole operation takes about three minutes. Prices are genuinely budget-friendly, typically around 10–18 PLN depending on size and toppings, making it one of the best-value eating experiences in the entire city. There are no tables, no chairs, no atmosphere beyond the open square around you — and that's exactly the point. Plac Nowy itself provides the setting: a lively, slightly gritty market square buzzing with locals, students, and night owls at all hours. Plan to spend no more than 15 minutes here, though you may find yourself lingering.

Insider Tip

The true Endzior experience happens late. This stall is built for midnight eating — ideally after a few hours in the bars and clubs that line Kazimierz's surrounding streets. The queue gets longer as the night goes on, not shorter, and the atmosphere transforms into something genuinely special: strangers sharing hot food under open sky, everyone equal in their hunger. If you're visiting during the day and want the full flavor hit, ask for extra mushrooms and a double pour of the ketchup-based sauce — most regulars don't skip this. It might not look elegant, but the best things in Krakow rarely do.
