Czartoryski Museum
One of the oldest museums in Poland, founded in 1796. Houses a world-class collection including Leonardo da Vinci's "Lady with an Ermine," Rembrandt works, and ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts.
Tucked within the heart of Krakow's Old Town, this is one of those rare museums where you find yourself standing face-to-face with something that genuinely stops you in your tracks. Few cultural institutions in Poland carry the weight — and the treasures — of the Czartoryski Museum.
History & Background
Founded in 1796 by Princess Izabela Czartoryska at the family estate in Puławy, the Czartoryski collection is one of the oldest museums in Poland and a cornerstone of Polish national identity. Izabela created it explicitly to preserve Polish heritage during a period when the country had been partitioned and erased from the map of Europe. The collection eventually found its permanent home in Krakow, housed in a complex of historic buildings near ul. św. Jana, where it remains today as part of the National Museum in Krakow. That founding spirit — art as an act of cultural resistance — gives every room here an added layer of meaning.
What to Expect
The undisputed star of the collection is Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine (circa 1489–1490), one of only four surviving paintings by Leonardo in the world. Seeing it in person is quietly breathtaking — it's smaller than most people imagine, and the psychological intensity of the subject is extraordinary up close. The museum also houses Rembrandt's Landscape with the Good Samaritan and an impressive array of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts that reflect the breadth of Izabela's collecting vision.
Beyond the headline works, the decorative arts, armor, and historical memorabilia tell a rich story of Polish aristocratic life and national struggle. Plan for at least 1.5 to 2 hours to move through the collection without rushing. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried — a genuine contrast to busier tourist attractions nearby. Entry costs 30 PLN, which is exceptional value given what's inside.
Insider Tip
Book your timed entry ticket online in advance, especially if you're visiting between May and September. Walk-up tickets for the Lady with an Ermine gallery can sell out on busy days, and nothing is more frustrating than queuing only to be turned away. Arriving right at 10:00 opening time on a weekday almost guarantees you'll have a few quiet minutes with Leonardo's masterpiece before the crowds filter in — a genuinely rare experience with a painting of this caliber.
