Rynek Underground Museum
A vast underground museum beneath the Main Market Square, accessed through the Cloth Hall. Archaeological excavations revealed the medieval market stalls, trade routes, and daily life of Krakow 700 years ago. Holographic projections and interactive displays bring the buried city back to life. One of the most innovative museum experiences in Europe.
Buried beneath one of Europe's most beautiful squares lies an entire medieval city — and you can walk through it. The Rynek Underground Museum is one of those rare attractions that genuinely earns the word extraordinary, pulling visitors 4 metres below Kraków's Main Market Square into a world that lay hidden for centuries.
History & Background
In 2005, during renovation work on the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), archaeologists made a remarkable discovery: preserved remnants of medieval market stalls, trade routes, and everyday objects dating back over 700 years. What emerged was a snapshot of Kraków at the height of its medieval power, when the city was one of Central Europe's most important trading hubs. The museum, which opened in 2010, was built around these excavations and now spans an extraordinary 4,000 square metres beneath the square's cobblestones. It's managed by the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków and stands as one of the most ambitious archaeological museum projects in Poland's history.
What to Expect
The experience begins as you descend through an entrance inside the Cloth Hall and step into a carefully reconstructed underground world. Walkways carry you above the original excavation site, where you can look down at medieval foundations, merchant stalls, and trade artefacts exactly where they were found. The magic, however, is in how the museum brings history to life — holographic projections recreate the faces of medieval citizens, while interactive displays let you explore daily commerce, crafts, and city planning from the 13th and 14th centuries. Atmospheric lighting and dramatic sound design make this feel less like a museum and more like time travel. Budget around 60–90 minutes to do it justice. Tickets cost approximately PLN 24 for adults, with free entry on Tuesdays.
Insider Tip
Skip the weekend crowds and visit on a Tuesday morning — not only is entry free, but the museum is significantly quieter, giving you room to linger at the holographic displays without being jostled. If you visit during peak summer months, book your timed entry ticket online in advance through the museum's website, as same-day tickets frequently sell out by mid-morning. The museum also gets wonderfully eerie in the evening — if you can snag a late afternoon slot, the underground atmosphere feels even more immersive once the square above starts to quiet down.
