The Pieniny Gorge of the Dunajec River is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Poland — and one of the most unusual river experiences in Europe. Traditional wooden rafts, steered by highlander boatmen in folk costume, navigate a dramatic gorge with 300-meter limestone cliffs on either side.
THE EXPERIENCE:
The raft trip covers approximately 18 km from Sromowce Katy to Szczawnica, taking 2-2.5 hours. Rafts carry 10-12 passengers on flat wooden platforms steered by two boatmen using long poles. The pace is leisurely — this is not whitewater rafting but a scenic float through extraordinary landscape. The boatmen share stories and jokes (often in Polish, but the scenery needs no translation).
HIGHLIGHTS: the Sokolica rock face (300m vertical cliff), the Slovak border (the river forms the Poland-Slovakia boundary), crystal-clear water, and possible sightings of eagles, herons, and otters.
GETTING THERE FROM KRAKOW:
Organized tours (200-300 PLN including transport, raft ticket, and guide) depart from Krakow at ~7 AM and return by ~5 PM. This is the easiest option.
By car: drive to Sromowce Katy (2.5 hours), raft to Szczawnica, then take the shuttle bus back to your car. Total day trip: 10-12 hours.
PRACTICAL:
Season: May-October (best June-September). Rafts depart continuously from ~9 AM.
Cost: raft ticket approximately 80 PLN per person.
What to bring: sunscreen, hat, water, camera (waterproof bag recommended — you may get splashed). The gorge can be cooler than the plains — bring a light layer.
COMBINE WITH: Niedzica Castle (romantic ruins on a cliff above a lake, near the raft starting point) and lunch in Szczawnica (a charming spa town at the finish).
