Chlopskie Jadlo

Old Town

A theatrical celebration of rustic Polish village cuisine. Tables are set with enamel plates, food arrives in cast iron pots, and portions are enormous. The lamb knuckle and bigos are standouts.

Few restaurants in Krakow commit to a theme as wholeheartedly — or as deliciously — as this beloved tribute to Polish village cooking. Step through the door and you're transported from the cobblestones of the Old Town into a rustic farmhouse world of folk art, wooden beams, and the kind of soul-warming food that Polish grandmothers have been making for centuries.

History & Background

Chłopskie Jadło — which translates roughly as "Peasant's Fare" — was founded in the 1990s as part of a wave of restaurants reclaiming and celebrating traditional Polish culinary heritage at a time when the country was rediscovering its cultural identity. The concept was simple but powerful: take the honest, hearty cooking of the Polish countryside and serve it with pride. It grew into a small chain, but the Krakow location remains the heart of the experience, drawing both curious visitors and locals who come for genuine comfort food rather than tourist-facing imitations.

What to Expect

The atmosphere is theatrical in the best possible way. You'll eat off enamel plates, food arrives bubbling in cast iron pots, and portions are, frankly, enormous — come hungry. The décor leans hard into rural Polish folklore, with hand-painted details and rustic wooden furniture that feels lived-in rather than staged. Expect a lively, bustling room most evenings, particularly on weekends.

The menu is a masterclass in traditional Polish cuisine. The lamb knuckle is the undisputed star — slow-cooked until falling off the bone, served with horseradish and pickled vegetables. The bigos, Poland's iconic hunter's stew of sauerkraut, mixed meats, and dried mushrooms, is rich and deeply flavoured, exactly as it should be. Wash everything down with żurek (sour rye soup) to start, and you've got one of the most authentically Polish meals you'll find in the city. Budget roughly 50–80 PLN per person for a full meal, making it excellent value for the Old Town.

Insider Tip

Skip the ground floor on busy evenings and ask to be seated upstairs — the upper dining room is slightly quieter, the décor even more atmospheric, and you're less likely to feel rushed. Also worth knowing: the lunchtime set menu offers a soup and main course at a significantly reduced price, making it one of the smartest midday stops in the neighbourhood if you want serious Polish food without the dinner-hour crowds.
