La Campana
Old Town
A tiny Italian restaurant hidden in a basement on Kanonicza Street, run by an Italian family. The pasta is made fresh daily, and the truffle dishes are excellent value compared to Italy.
Tucked beneath the cobblestones of one of Krakow's most storied streets, this tiny basement trattoria quietly delivers some of the most authentic Italian food you'll find outside of Italy — and almost nobody outside the neighbourhood knows it exists.
History & Background
La Campana sits on Kanonicza Street, a remarkably preserved medieval lane that once housed Krakow's cathedral clergy and later served as the residence of a young Karol Wojtyła before he became Pope John Paul II. The restaurant is a family operation, run by an Italian family who brought their recipes, their standards, and their passion for real ingredients to this atmospheric corner of Krakow's Old Town. In a city where Italian restaurants range from excellent to deeply mediocre, La Campana has built a loyal following among expats, food-conscious travellers, and locals who appreciate the difference between fresh and dried pasta.
What to Expect
Descend the steps into a small, vaulted basement dining room — intimate to the point of being cosy, with just a handful of tables. The space feels genuinely Italian rather than themed, which tells you something about the people running it. The menu focuses on what the kitchen does best: fresh pasta made daily on the premises, and a selection of truffle dishes that represent extraordinary value. Black and white truffle preparations that would cost a small fortune in Rome or Florence are offered here at moderate prices, typically in the 80–150 PLN range for a main course. Portions are generous, ingredients are sourced carefully, and nothing on the plate feels like an afterthought. Budget around 90 minutes for a relaxed two-course meal.
Insider Tip
The truffle pasta is the dish to order — specifically whatever the kitchen is running as the daily truffle special, which changes based on seasonal availability. Don't be tempted to default to something more familiar. The truffle dishes here are priced the way they are because the family sources directly and the overheads of a small Krakow basement are nothing like a Roman restaurant. You are getting genuinely good truffle at a fraction of what you'd pay anywhere in Italy. Ask your server what came in fresh that week — they'll tell you honestly, and that conversation alone will point you toward the best thing on the menu.
