Day Trip to Zakopane: Krakow's Mountain Escape

The Tatra Mountain resort town is just two hours from Krakow.

Zakopane, the "winter capital of Poland," sits at the foot of the Tatra Mountains 100 km south of Krakow. Whether you want to hike, ski, or simply breathe mountain air, it makes an excellent day trip.

Getting there: regular buses from Krakow's MDA bus station (20-25 PLN, 2 hours, departures every 30-60 minutes). Alternatively, FlixBus or private transfer. Driving takes 1.5-2 hours via the Zakopianka highway.

Summer activities: hiking is the main draw. The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch (1,987m) offers panoramic views of the High Tatras and is accessible for non-hikers. The Morskie Oko trail (9 km one way to a stunning glacial lake) is Poland's most popular hike — take the horse-drawn cart for part of the route. The Krupowki pedestrian street is lined with restaurants, shops, and highlander culture.

Winter activities: skiing and snowboarding at Kasprowy Wierch and Nosal. The thermal baths at Termy Bukovina or Chocholow (hot springs, water parks) are perfect for non-skiers. Cross-country skiing trails wind through the valleys.

Food: highlander cuisine is hearty — grilled oscypek with cranberry, lamb stew, kwanica (sauerkraut soup), and krupniok (blood sausage). Eat at a traditional karczma (wooden inn) rather than the tourist spots on Krupowki.

Shopping: handmade sheepskin slippers (kierpce), carved wooden boxes, smoked cheese, and oscypek make great souvenirs. Buy directly from highland producers for authenticity.

Day trip timing: depart Krakow by 8 AM, return by 7-8 PM for a full day.
